The PSTN Switch Off is set for 2025, meaning the country will soon upgrade from traditional telephone landlines to cloud-based telephony. But, did you know the switch off will also impact other services such as ADSL and FTTC broadband, intruder alarm systems, fire alarm systems, fax machhines and payment card machines?

What is PSTN?

PSTN stands for Public Switched Telephone Network. It’s the infrastructure behind the traditional telephone lines we used to rely on in the UK, but it also supports other technology like fax machines, card processing machines and certain types of broadband services.

The PSTN was created in the 19th century. Understandably, it’s grown old and tired and is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain. Technology has also moved on, offering faster and better quality alternatives to PSTN-based services.

So what’s next?

If you already have a fibre broadband or ethernet product and do not use any traditional voice services, you won’t need to do a thing. If not, your provider will strive to migrate all PSTN services to alternative solutions before the Switch Off deadline in 2025. You can also make the most of future-proof technology now and upgrade as soon as possible. At Pioneer Solutions, we’d be happy to take you through every step of the process.
